They are the best!-- handpicked by the librarians who work at your library. These staff members help you find what you like to read, to hear, and to see every day. They help you find resources and answer your questions.

Why use this list?

Books can change lives. Each of us remembers a special book. Perhaps it was Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon or Judy Blume’s Superfudge. Last September at the National Book Festival, Blume talked about the impact Maud Hart Lovelace’s "Betsy Tacy" series had on her writing. This list gives you the opportunity to give someone that special book — the one they will remember and treasure throughout their lives.

Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education says, “We are what we learn.” The titles which the librarians picked offer you are an opportunity to offer those you love a unique and enjoyable experience, one which may help them understand the world in a different way, a way that resonates with them.

Enjoy your holidays! I wish you a rewarding 2010, filled with good books, good music and good films. See you at the library!

Gail

Movies

Big Night -- DVD
With the recent release of Julie and Julia I am reminded of another great food movie, also starring Stanley Tucci -- Big Night. Tucci and Tony Shalhoub star as immigrant brothers who own an Italian restaurant with great food but few customers. Roger Ebert calls this is “a film of great wisdom and delight.” ~Julie

The Fall – DVD
In a hospital in 1920s Los Angeles, an injured stuntman tells a little girl with a broken arm a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes. Thanks to his fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur as the tale advances. When the cons head for Detroit to pull off their final big scam, the Marshal is put on their case but finds she is attracted to one of them and has second thoughts about bringing them in. Richard Lester has made this into a tongue-in-cheek, adventurous, swashbuckling tale. Lots of fun for the whole family! ~Julie

Thunderheart – DVD
Val Kilmer plays an FBI man with Sioux background who is sent to a South Dakota reservation to help with a murder investigation. The cinematography is fantastic, the acting, particularly from Kilmer and Graham Greene is superb. This is a great mystery as well as a film that leaves you thinking. ~Julie

Bell, Book and Candle -- DVD
A frothy romance starring Kim Novak as a seductive Greenwich Village witch who ensnares publisher Jimmy Stewart to spite an old college rival. Mayhem ensues, but Novak is in trouble when she falls for Stewart, since a witch loses her powers when she falls in love. Gorgeous costumes, great soundtrack, and wonderful supporting cast, including a young Jack Lemmon as Novak’s bongo playing brother, Elsa Lanchester as her dotty aunt, and Ernie Kovacs as a hard drinking writer. ~Macaire

Coraline (Single-Disc Edition w/ 3D) -- DVD
This deliciously dark and delightful animated movie, created from the Neil Gaiman book of the same name, tells the story of a girl who is bored with her ordinary life and finds a much more interesting one with her “other” parents who are endlessly devoted and attentive to her. But as she spends more time with them, she discovers they are sinister and dangerous and she has to fight to get back to her real life. Denny is an avid race car driver who brings Enzo home as a puppy and gradually expands their family to include a wife and daughter, a house and a sports car. As their lives take some difficult turns, Denny’s strength is tested and Enzo listens and encourages him wordlessly as he observes the many human complications and despairs about his inability to speak and his lack of opposable thumbs, which he longs for and looks forward to having in his next incarnation as a man. The show takes two teens from each district and brings them to the Capitol to participate in “The Hunger Games,” a game that only has one victor. The rest will all be dead. Katniss has had to take care of her family and can not bear to have her younger sister participate in the games, so she chooses to take her place. The other contestant from her district is the baker’s son. Although they know each other, only one will come home. The first book is impossible to put down, while the second will leave the reader hanging for the third. Any teen (boy or girl) on your list will thank you for these books! What’s surprising is that the “hero” is a weather-beaten, thirty-year-old heroine: Balsa Spear-wielder, an itinerant bodyguard. After Balsa saves Chagum, the son of the Mikado, Chagum’s mother hires Balsa to protect him; she is certain that Chagum will be murdered because he is host to a mythical creature, a fact that belies the divine nature of the Mikado. Balsa must solve a mystery involving the creature and protect Chagum from both the Mikado’s elite forces and an otherworldly monster. The Moribito series is enormously popular in Japan. It should either be expensive and large, or cheap and small. It should be high-minded or totally frivolous.
-- William Grimes, New York Times, December 15, 2006

When the holiday season comes, I exchange gifts with special friends as well as family. Finding the perfect item for them is always a challenge. There’s the voracious reader, who usually picks mysteries; my son, a great fan of Heroes and all things science fiction and fantasy; my young niece, who I don’t see very often; and a new friend, one whose companionship and support has meant a lot to me this year. I want something they will like, something that will perhaps speak to them in a new way and encourage them to look at the world just a little differently. I want that WOW! item.
I also want a a gift that fits with their lives—a book for the person whose children have moved out, a great film for someone who loves the cinema, or a magazine for those who only have quick little pieces of time because their days are busy.

Welcome to the Fifth Annual Season's Readings!
These items, picked by our librarians, include outstanding titles in a variety of formats. These are the ones that you just might not find otherwise. It is part graphic novel (sequential art), part picture book, wordless, dramatic, enthralling, and I could go on with the superlatives. It is a story of immigration that takes the reader (and you really have to read the pictures) through the hard journey of a new immigrant, his hopes for the future, his family left behind, and the loneliness of this journey. Well done novel based on the author’s real life freshman year in high school. A Native American boy, living on a Spokane reservation, chooses to go to a white school. He must deal with racism, poverty, death, alcohol abuse, and typical teenage problems, too. It is very funny, with an original voice. Arrested in wartime Leningrad, Kolya for desertion and Lev for plundering, their lives are spared by an NKVD colonel who offers to let them live if they bring him a dozen eggs for his daughter’s wedding cake – not a simple task in city under siege. In spite of the wartime horrors they witness and the seeming impossibility of their task, Kolya never loses his optimism. Through determination and practicality, she establishes a life in the city only to learn that her daughter Sophie, believed dead, is reportedly alive and in Siberia. Lahiri, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship, writes about the experiences of the Bengali Indians who came to the United States in the sixties and of their children, born and raised American. These eight stories describe the relationships between parents and children, brothers and sisters, and friends. When she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams asking for advice about an author they both admire, she is drawn to Guernsey Island where she discovers a community of intrepid people who survived the German occupation of the island. The combination of history, romance and humor make this a delightful read.
ISBN 978-038-5340-991; Audiobook: 0739368435
–Judie Harren

The View from Mount Joy
by Lorna Landvik
I have always enjoyed this author and her recent book is no exception. Her characters are quirky and engaging and her stories draw you into the wholesome atmosphere of the Midwest. In this story we follow the life of Joe Andreson, a likeable guy who grows up from a high school hockey player full of dreams and uncertainty to a successful businessman and father. But the path is a complicated one and his relationship with Kristi Casey, the most popular girl in school and later famous evangelist, continues to invade his life and provide insights into the darker side of human nature. Ultimately, Joe grows into a man who finds joy in his family and friends who surround and nurture him through thick and thin.
ISBN: 978-0345468383
–Judie Harren

Good Grief
by Lolly Winston
I loved the way this new author wove grief and humor together to portray a young woman’s struggle with the loss of her husband. Sophie is an intelligent and responsible PR manager until her husband succumbs to cancer and she finds herself buried under the blankets eating mountains of Oreos and stumbling haphazardly through her life. When she arrives at work in her bathrobe, it becomes apparent that it’s time to try something new and she moves in with her friend in small town Ashland, Oregon to try to rebuild her life. The story is never dull and the emotional tribulations are both heartfelt and funny.
ISBN: 978-0446619066
–Judie Harren

The Rules of Gentility
by Janet Mullany
Jane Austen meets Bridget Jones, and the result is Philomena Wellesley-Clegg, a young lady of substantial fortune and respectable (if somewhat plebeian) breeding. Philomena is in London hunting for a suitable husband; enter Inigo Linsley, the wicked younger son of a noble family, possessed of modest expectations and tremendous charm. Can “true love” be far behind? This gentle spoof of regency romances and chick lit is both charming and laugh-out-loud funny.
ISBN: 0061229830
–Macaire Hill

NONFICTION -- Words to Live By

The Last Lecture
by Randy Pausch
Carnegie-Mellon professor Pausch delivered a “last lecture” after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Larson
Thomas Jefferson and John Adams faced off in the campaign of 1800 which, according to historian Larson, was the first contested presidential election. Both the Republican and the Federalist parties indulged in bitter partisan wrangling and mud-slinging and invented lies about their opponents. “Politics are such a torment that I would advise every one I love not to mix with them,” Thomas Jefferson wrote to his daughter Martha during the campaign. I have given it to friends, who have in turn given it to their friends. The recipes are easy and straightforward and combine the traditional with the contemporary. A joint effort of the authors and Congregation Agudat Achim in Niskayuna, New York, it includes signature recipes of the synagogue’s award-winning catering service. Recipes cover all holidays and all occasions for creative home cooking and gracious entertaining. Even more helpful is a section itemizing the quantities you need to feed groups of 10, 20, 50 or more. Kosher cooking separates dairy dishes from meat dishes as well as those which are both dairy and meat free, so those who are lactose intolerant or have an allergy to gluten will also find it useful. It is about all aspects of moviemaking; about the technical problems, the boredom between takes and about the romances and intrigues.
